Potassium Iodide is a salt made up of the minerals iodine and potassium. Because Potassium Iodide contains nonradioactive iodine it is often used during emergencies resulting in radiation exposure to block radioactive iodine from entering the thyroid gland. The contamination of the thyroid gland with radioactive iodine is a major cause of damage from radiation exposure.

Potassium Iodide saturates the thyroid with nonradioactive iodine for roughly 24 hours after use. It should be noted that Potassium Iodine is not a general radioprotective agent and only prevents the thyroid from absorbing radioactive iodine.

In emergency situations or when directed by health authorities, we recommend taking 130 mg (2 tablets) per day for individuals who are 18 years and older or weigh more than 150 lbs. Individuals who are younger than 18 years and weight less than 150 lbs should take 65 mg (1 tablet) per day.

Potassium Iodide is intended for short-term use only and daily use is not recommended for longer than 2 weeks.

Potassium Iodide is only recommended for short-term use in a nuclear emergency and can cause adverse side effects. Most commonly, side effects of Potassium Iodide include swelling and tenderness of the jaw, rashes, nausea, diarrhea, and stomach pain.

More severe side effects include fever, tiredness, chest pain, numbness, heavy feeling in the legs, and swelling of hands or feet. If you experience these side effects stop taking Potassium Iodide and call your doctor immediately.

Potassium Iodide is only meant to be used in the short-term during an emergency in which exposure to radiation is possible. We do not recommend using it for any other purpose.
