Alpha-Ketoglutaric Acid (AKG) is a ketone derivative of glutaric acid which is found naturally in the human body where it has a number of functions including acting as an intermediate step in the Krebs cycle, helping to form amino acids, transporting nitrogen, and acting as an antioxidant.

While AKG plays many roles in the body, it is commonly supplemented by athletes to support athletic performance, and as a supplement to support longevity. This function has been established in multiple animal studies but there has yet to be any human trials to see if this benefit is also true for humans.

As a supplement for athletic performance, we recommend taking between 2-4 capsules of Alpha-Ketoglutaric Acid (1000 – 1500 mg) about an hour before competing. As a daily supplement for longevity, we recommend taking two capsules per day (1000 mg).

As AKG is water soluble it does not need to be taken with food for proper absorption. We do not recommend exceeding 4 capsules per day.

As a naturally occurring compound in the body, Alpha-Ketoglutaric Acid is extremely safe and well tolerated. Studies on AKG have found adverse side effects to be extremely rare even after years of daily use. Reported side effects include dizziness, vomiting, and diarrhea.

We don’t recommend that pregnant women use AKG as there is no research on its safety in pregnant women.
